Lonely

It's incredibly hard to learn, that people will not be there for you.

That sometimes, even people you consider your closest friends, will not be there for you. Usually this is painful because they have been there for you in the past, but when that changes, it is something that can be really hard to deal with.

Because you're alone.

You can even be with those people, hanging out with them, sitting across the table from them, and still be alone. And that's hard.

Because you're alone.

We Shall Fight

Winston Churchill famously said:

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old.

  • Speech in the House of Commons (4 June 1940).

  • This is a really famous quotation about the resolve of the British Empire and people in the face of the evil tyranny of National Socialism as it swept across the continent. I think that in the Church we can still take some inspiration from this tenacity:

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in Europe, we shall fight on the airwaves and internet, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in world, we shall defend our Church, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the airwaves, we shall fight in our schools and in our workplaces, we shall fight in our homes; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, our country or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Church beyond our shores, armed and guarded by the Holy Spirit, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and liberation of the Old.
